In the 1st century, the Apostle Thomas anointed priests and bishops at the site of the Odzun Monastery, and the name of the Odzun Monastery is associated with the Armenian word “otsel”which in Armenian means to anoint. Subsequently, the monastery was rebuilt by the Armenian Catholicos John (Hovhannes) of Odzun.
The monastery of St. Hovhannes or Srbanes in Ardvi is a unique holy place and pilgrimage center, where you can re-experience the atmosphere of S. Parajanov’s famous movie “The Color of Pomegranate”.
The serpent’s navel is one of the natural monuments of Ardvi, where, according to legend, Hovhan of Odzun hit the dragons’ heads with his staff, and at the same moment the dragons turned into stone. The water coming from the Serpent’s Navel is believed to have healing properties.
