Route

Direction 1Tanahat monastery

Tanahat was also called the Red Monastery as it was built of red stone. The monastery was built on the site of a pagan shrine, which was dedicated to the Armenian goddess Anahit, and in the 5th century a Christian temple was founded here.

Direction 2Arates monastery

The semi-destroyed monumental group of Arates consists of several chapels, the churches of St. Zion (10th century) and St. Astvatsatsin (11th century) and two narthexes (13th century), the domes of which have not been preserved, but the complex is so impressive that it carries the name Arates (Arm. come and see).

Direction 3Tsaghats Kar

Tsaghats Kar church was built in the 10th century. It was a medieval educational institution where painting was studied, and there is an assumption that its name might come from the name of “tsaghkats kar”, which means “flowering stone” in Armenian.
